We are afraid of the wrong things

This is so true wouldn’t you agree? The world we live in has so many opportunities and ventures waiting for us, yet we are afraid to take the leap. You see in life, in Cape Town in particular, I’ve noticed many people, they need security, stability and safety, and once they’ve reached those markers, it’s stop right there and they become consumed in a term that is very common - the “COMFORT ZONE”. Majority of Cape Tonians prefer there city over any other city in South Africa, let alone the world. Why is that? Is it because we’re afraid of what lies out there and too scared something bad might happen to you.

Many people from Cape Town who have ventured to JHB in seek for a better career and job end up returning because the lifestyle is faster, the roads are confusing and it’s just not the same’, they’d say.

If I won the lotto tomorrow, I would take my money and travel the world. Others would rather just have a jol of time having lavish parties, drive exotic cars and flaunt their rich lifestyle with everyone. We are all going to die one day, so why be stuck in hole that only has so much to offer when there’s an entire world waiting for you.

Ultimately, it’s how you were culturally and socially influenced throughout your child wood to you adult years that also shape your thoughts on what you may or may not do. Many times I feel that your culture bounds you, and it shouldn’t, if you have a way of belief, you have the right to practice it anywhere else in the world, but because we fear others, we decide not to.

In honesty yes, I was raised in a secure and safe household, and I do always think way in advance before I make big decisions like going overseas. I don’t think I’ve truly lived yet, because by living just living, you do the wrong things you fear, you laugh out loud in a library as a form of expression, you go skinny dipping in a public pool, or you go places not knowing what to expect, because deep down you know you’ll get through and if you believe it, it’s very likely to happen.

Remember, everyone in this life has a life to live, and you can’t always watch someone else’s back because you scared you might say or do the wrong things. I mean if you don’t do it, how will you know if it was wrong? It might be wrong to your culture or societal background, but what do you feel is right and what is wrong?
You‘ll be surprised how life brings out the best in you if you put or present the best person you can be. It rewards you in many ways you can possibly imagine. Don’t you think that is why life throws curve balls at you to wake you up some how?

If you living in Cape Town, I urge you to take that leap, if it’s not for you, well then you at least know you took that leap, but if you haven’t tried, you’ll probably never know.

  1. Conversely, the same way people fear to get out of the counrty to visit other regions the same goes for people who don't wish to come down to SA due to security matters. We've become so oblivious of the situation that it doesn't mean too much to us compared to someone who has freshly landed in the country. It is better to adapt to the environment and try new travel ventures than just endure it.

  2. It’s true, we tend to let fear stop us from grabbing opportunities in front of us. I think that is because we fear failing, but how will one know whether they will be successful or not if they don’t even give it a shot. We need to believe in our selves more, who knows we might end up surprising our selves.
